Seven signs your gutters need replacing, not repairing

Repairing a gutter is often cheaper than replacing it — but only when the system still has useful life left. These are the signs that the system is past saving, and the alternatives to consider.

A gutter system rarely fails all at once. It ages slowly, and the warning signs show up long before the water starts running down the wall. Catching those signs early is what separates a cheap repair from an expensive replacement.

Below are the signals we look for when assessing a gutter system. Any single one of these might be repairable. Two or three of them together usually mean the system is past its useful life.

1. Water running down the wall during rain

This is the classic sign. It usually means one of three things: the gutter is blocked and overflowing, the gutter has lost its pitch so water is standing instead of draining, or there is a leak at a joint or seam. All three are fixable if the gutter itself is still sound.

2. Rust or corrosion along the run

Rust is a sign the material itself is failing. Surface rust can sometimes be treated, but once rust has started to perforate the metal — usually visible as small holes or flaking along the inside — the gutter has reached the end of its life. Patching rust spots just moves the problem around.

3. Sagging or pulled fixings

Gutters sag for a reason: either the fixings have pulled from the fascia board, or the fascia board itself has rotted, or the gutter has been overloaded with water and debris. If one section is sagging it can be re-fixed. If the whole run is drooping, the fascia may be failing too — and that is a bigger job than a gutter repair.

4. Repeated leaks at the same joins

Sectional gutters have a joint every couple of metres. If you find yourself re-sealing the same joint every year, the sealant is doing the work, not the gutter. Eventually the sealant stops holding. This is the most common reason people switch to seamless gutters.

5. Cracks or splits

Small hairline cracks can sometimes be sealed. Long splits or visible cracks that open up in the sun and close in the cold usually mean the material has become brittle. Sealing them is a temporary fix at best.

6. Overflow in normal rain

If water is going over the sides of a gutter during an ordinary rain shower — not a once-in-a-decade downpour — the gutter is either too small for the roof area it is draining, or it is blocked, or the downpipes cannot keep up. Undersized gutters are common on older buildings that were built before modern rainfall assumptions, and the fix is usually a larger profile.

7. Standing water or insect breeding

Gutters that hold water instead of draining it are a health risk as well as a structural one. Standing water is where mosquitoes breed, and it is also what accelerates rust from the inside. If gutters are holding water after rain, the pitch or the drainage is wrong.

Repair or replace? The honest answer

Repair is the right choice when:

  • The material is still sound — no rust, no cracks, no splits
  • Only one or two isolated problems exist
  • The gutter profile is the correct size for the roof
  • The fixings and fascia board are in good condition

Replacement is usually the better spend when:

  • Rust or corrosion has spread along the run
  • The gutter is undersized for the roof area
  • Multiple joints are leaking repeatedly
  • The fascia board is soft or the fixings keep pulling
  • The system is over twenty years old and has had multiple repairs

What replacement involves

Replacing a gutter system is usually a one-day job on a typical house. We remove the old gutter, check the fascia, and install a new seamless system formed on site to fit. Downpipes are usually re-used if they are in good condition, and replaced if not.

We do not push a replacement when a repair will do. If you call us out and the system is genuinely repairable, that is the quote you get.

Get an honest assessment

If you are unsure whether your gutters need repairing or replacing, send us a few photos of the gutters from the ground — a shot of the run, a shot of the downpipes, and a close-up of anything that looks wrong. We can often give you a preliminary view before we visit.
