Getting gutters ready before the Zimbabwean rainy season
The best time to deal with a gutter problem is before it rains. This is the pre-season checklist we recommend to homeowners and property managers in Harare, Norton, Ruwa and Mutare.
Zimbabwe's rainy season does not gently arrive — it announces itself. Once the first heavy storm hits, anything that was going to go wrong with your gutters is going to go wrong fast. The weeks before that first storm are the best time to sort it out.
This is the checklist we recommend to homeowners, landlords and property managers in Harare, Norton, Ruwa, Mutare and further afield. It takes an afternoon for a typical house and saves you a lot of trouble later.
1. Clear out debris — safely
The single biggest cause of gutter failure is debris. Leaves, twigs, seed pods and sand all build up in the gutter over the dry months. When the rain comes, the debris blocks the flow, water backs up, and either overflows the gutter or backs up under the roof edge.
Clear the gutters from a stable ladder or, if the roof is high, from the roof itself — never from a ladder perched on a slippery surface. If a section is beyond reach, leave it for a professional.
2. Check the downpipes
Downpipes block just as easily as gutters do. Disconnect the bottom section if you can and check the flow, or run a hose into the top of the downpipe and see whether water is coming out properly at the base. If water backs up, the pipe is blocked and needs clearing.
3. Look for leaks and rust
Walk the run from ground level and look up. Watermarks on the wall below the gutter, rust stains, or dark patches on the fascia board all point to a leak or an overflow that has happened in the past. Also check the inside of the gutter itself — a torch from underneath helps — for rust spots or holes.
4. Check the pitch
Gutters need a slight fall towards the downpipe so that water drains instead of standing. If you see standing water in the gutter after it rains, the pitch is wrong. That can be adjusted by re-fixing the brackets, or it may mean the fascia board has softened and needs attention.
5. Look at the fascia board
The fascia board is what the gutter actually mounts to. If it is soft, crumbly, or showing signs of rot, new brackets will not hold for long. This is the kind of thing that gets missed because it is hidden behind the gutter itself — a good reason to have the system professionally inspected if you are not sure.
6. Test with water before the season starts
Once everything is cleared, run a hose along the gutter and watch what happens. Water should flow smoothly to the downpipe without pooling. If it pools, if it runs the wrong way, or if it comes out somewhere it should not, you have found a problem early — before a storm finds it for you.
7. Look at the ground below the downpipe
Where does the water actually go once it leaves the downpipe? If it discharges directly against the wall or into a low spot near the foundation, you are undoing the whole point of the gutter. Ideally, water should discharge onto a splash block or into a drainage run that carries it away from the building.
What to do if you find problems
Some of what you find is a DIY fix — clearing debris, unblocking a downpipe, replacing a simple bracket. Some is not:
- Rust holes or cracks: call a professional. Patching is temporary at best.
- Widespread sagging: the fixings or the fascia are failing — a bigger job.
- Undersized gutters: if the roof was built for lighter rain and now overflows every season, a larger profile may be needed.
- Repeated leaking at joins: with a sectional system this often means the seals are done and re-sealing will not help for long.
Why pre-season is the right time
Gutter work is easier, safer and cheaper to schedule in the dry weeks before the rain starts. Once the season is underway, roof access is more difficult, wet work takes longer, and everyone is trying to book the same tradespeople at the same time.
If your gutters were a problem last rainy season, they will be a problem again this one — likely worse, because they will have had another year to deteriorate. Pre-season is when you fix that cheaply.
Book a pre-season gutter check
Wintra Projects offers pre-season gutter checks for homes, businesses and property portfolios. We clear the gutters, check the fixings, inspect the downpipes, and give you an honest view on whether the system will get through the coming season — or whether it needs replacing first.
